In recent years social studies education in Middle Schools in New York has received
much attention. Professional Development has been limited and yet is more critical
than ever. Middle School educators are face with the responsibility of not
only teaching our young people the social studies curriculum but providing them
with the best possible preparation to succeed in the Grade 8 Statewide Social Studies
examination. It is also essential to prepare middle school students for the rigorous
curricula in the High Schools.
Over the past several years through partnerships with various institutions our schools
have been participating in American history professional development programs funded
federally through the Teaching American History Grants. This web site is dedicated
to providing teachers of middle school students with the benefits of the many resources
developed.
Resources for teachers are derived from many different sources. It is the purpose
of this website to provide reliable materials, activities as well as links to a
variety of organizations that are dedicated to the support of social studies pedagogues.
As you navigate this site, you will also find a variety of teacher created activities
develop as a result of their participation in the Teaching American History Grants.
